African slavery dates back centuries. The transatlantic slave trade sent enslaved Africans to the New World to work. Millions of Africans were enslaved for centuries. Slavery devastated Africans. Many lost their families and cultures. Slavery killed millions of Africans. Survivors of the expedition were forced to work on colonist plantations for little or no pay and terrible penalties. African slavery was abolished slowly and painfully. The Thirteenth Amendment abolished US slavery in 1865. The Fourteenth Amendment, granting Black Americans citizenship, followed. In 1833, the British Empire abolished slavery, but it took decades for all Caribbean provinces to end it.
