As a class we’ve covered a variety of mediums. Some are familiar to a classroom (textbooks, short educational videos, primary sources) and some are atypical (monographs, films, video games, plays). For your final paper, reflect on one medium from this course that you found was effective or interesting and on another that was ineffective or uninteresting to you. Be sure to fully explain your thinking and use examples or evidence. You may use any of our course materials as evidence or examples with two exceptions: you may NOT use the Epic of Gilgamesh or the Bacchae. Some starting points: This a thesis driven paper. Your views on what was effective or ineffective form the basis of your thesis statement. Evidence or providing examples matter. Analyzing and explaining your evidence or examples matters even more. This is a personal reflection paper. Your voice and your views are not right or wrong. Defend them.
People can learn history in numerous ways, and this course offered numerous historical mediums to students. These included some of the more traditional ones, like lectures and prescribed readings, and others of the less traditional ones, like films and narrative histories. The two mediums present the past in different ways and shape students' perceptions of historical events and ideas. The history of some kinds is comprehensible and meaningful, and that of some others may appear unreachable. This reflection paper is about how The Last Duel was the effective medium to learn about the medieval society since it presented the history in a more real and accessible way while reading the primary sources of Plato, The Apology and The Allegory of the Cave, was not the most effective medium to learn about it since the abstract language and philosophical style made it hard to grasp and connect with the information.
