The case that occurred at Torrance Memorial Hospital appears to me as a clear breach of professionalism and an intentional tort. According to the article posted on ABC News, a woman was suing the hospital after learning that medical staff had placed stickers on her body when she was under surgery as a prank (ABC News, 2013). Even though the hospital later admitted that the professionalism had indeed been violated, the event was not simply the failure to make good decisions. It was intentional negligence on the part of the surgical staff that violated the dignity, privacy, and trust of the patient. An act that occurs in tort law can be said to be a battery (unauthorized physical contact) and intentional causing emotional distress since the prank caused emotional trauma and humiliation.
