The Mental Health Awareness Movement is one of the strongest social movements in the United States that focuses on the reduction of stigma, the enhancement of accessibility to services, and the enactment of legislation that would support the individuals with the mental illness. The movement has endeavored to raise awareness regarding issues like depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder in the last 20 years and this has seen to it that the general population and policy makers consider mental health as a requisite to overall well-being. The movement has created critical awareness of mental health disparities and treatment gaps through nationwide campaigns such as the Mental Health Awareness Month, and advocacy by various organizations such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
